Finishing Touches for Your MBA Application

September marks the start of Round 1 MBA application deadlines! Although you’ve (hopefully) conquered the hardest part of the MBA application, finishing it, there is always room for small improvements. As you’re adding the finishing touches, here are a key few tips to keep in mind:

  • Proofread, proofread, proofread! The small iterations in your essay make a big difference. Although your stories might make sense, don’t forget to check your spelling and grammar.

  • Pay attention to school specifications around word count, line spacing, headers, footers, font, and margins!

  • Make sure that your recommenders have submitted their letters. Once they hit ‘submit’ you should receive an automated email confirming that your recommendation letter is in.

  • Double-check that you are submitting the correct, clean, updated version of all your materials.

  • Address the gaps within your application, such as a low GPA or a lack of extracurricular activities. There is an inherent fear that if you address a gap you are unnecessarily calling attention to it, however, you don’t want to rely on the admissions committee to fill in the blanks. Instead, sincerely reflect on the gap and discuss the lessons you learned.

  • There are many pieces to an MBA application: short answers, your resume and work history, recommendation letters, and essays. Read everything together and make sure that the elements complement each other, but are not duplicative or conflicting. In other words, use all of the pieces to tell one story.
